Preservation & Conservation of the Kigezi Goat breed in Uganda
- We develop live population breeding programs that would utilize, characterize and conserve the Kigezi goat
- Collection, processing and preservation of semen, ova, embryos and blood from Kigezi goats
- Characterisation and conserving the Kigezi goat genetic resources and maintaining genetic resources in an identifiable and potentially usable form
- Characterization, documentation and conservation through the preservation of live animals (in situ) or cryogenic conservation and storage of semen and embryos (ex situ) of Kigezi goats.
- Multiplication and increased production of the Kigezi goats breed among goat farmers in Kigezi and the entire country by supply of pure breeding bucks.
- Promoting the farming of Kigezi goat breeds by organizing events, goat shows, and Kigezi goat meat festivals.
Improving Rural Livelihoods for Women and Youth through goat farming.
- Formation of Goat interest groups
- Increasing number of households owning Kigezi goat by using the Heifer International model of “Passing on the gift’
- Increasing access to veterinary extension services, to all the Kigezi goat farmers
- Increasing access to credit through Goat interest group savings schemes
